Well, so begins this blog. This year my wife and I have been wondering what to do with the space we created in our backyard when we took down our above-ground Doughboy Pool that came with the house we purchased in October 2009. We wanted to create a garden, and do it somewhat economically. To begin, while my wife and son were visiting relatives I built a couple 4' x 4' x 6" raised garden beds from old wood I recycled from our yard and planted zucchini and butternut squash. For soil I added half and half organic material and clay soil from the backyard. I chose these two to grow because (1) they're easy to grow for a first-time garden and (2) it would help elevate my confidence. Through the summer we harvested a lot of zucchini and this fall the butternut squash have been coming on board. We've been giving away the vegetables to neighbors and friends and work.
Also, because of our son who is now almost two years old we wanted to reduce the number of different chemicals used to clean our house. It's amazing what a couple (well, maybe more than a couple) common items one can buy at the grocery store (and quite inexpensively, actually) to make safe, cleaning products for the bathrooms, kitchen, whatever.
So, although we're not expert gardeners I wanted to share some of our experiences while we go on this misadventure, and also provide some ideas for cleaning around the house using common inexpensive items which are ecofriendly and nontoxic. Here goes!
